Warning issued as heavy vehicle crashes killed 40 in UAE in 2024

Sharjah: At least 40 people have lost lives in road accidents involving heavy vehicles in 2024, according to the UAE Ministry of Interior

Statistics revealed that heavy vehicle accidents, especially those involving trucks, led to a troubling rise in fatalities and injuries across the country.

According to a recent report from the Ministry of Interior, a total of 321 traffic accidents involving large vehicles resulted in 40 deaths and 251 injuries. The figures highlight an urgent need for improved safety protocols and heightened awareness among drivers of heavy vehicles.

The Ministry’s report sheds light on the types of vehicles involved in these incidents. Among the accidents, 112 were attributed to heavy buses (carrying 27 or more passengers), resulting in 17 fatalities and 277 injuries. In contrast, 126 incidents involving light buses (with fewer than 27 passengers) led to 10 deaths and 201 injuries.

These statistics point to a concerning pattern of risk, particularly with large vehicles, and underscore the need for better road safety measures.

The causes of these accidents are varied, but common contributing factors include:

Failure to maintain safe distance: Many accidents were linked to drivers not keeping an adequate distance from other vehicles.

Improper overtaking: Risky and illegal overtaking maneuvers were a significant cause of crashes.

Driver negligence: Distracted driving and lack of attention on the road led to several accidents.

Tyre defects: Faulty or worn-out tyres contributed to some of the crashes.

Traffic regulation violations: A failure to follow road rules, such as lane discipline, played a role in many incidents.

Sudden lane changes and distractions: Abrupt lane shifts and distractions were also frequent causes of accidents.

In response to these alarming statistics, the Ministry of Interior has introduced a set of safety guidelines aimed at reducing accidents and improving overall road safety.

Truck drivers, in particular, are urged to follow these practices:

Stick to the right lane: Truck drivers should always stay in the rightmost lane and only change lanes when absolutely necessary.

Maintain a safe distance: A safe gap between the truck and other vehicles should always be maintained to allow for smooth and safe maneuvers.

Overtake only in emergencies: Overtaking should be reserved for urgent situations, as improper overtaking often leads to accidents.

Check blind spots: Drivers should always check their blind spots thoroughly before changing lanes or making turns to avoid collisions.

Use indicators early: Turn signals should be used well in advance when changing lanes or turning, to alert other drivers and reduce the risk of accidents.

Follow traffic laws: Strict adherence to traffic regulations, including speed limits and lane discipline, is essential to ensuring safety on the roads.
