Dubai: The end of Emirates Road bordering Sharjah coming from Dubai has seen four fatal traffic accidents in the past few days, demanding attention from concerned authorities.

Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Dubai Traffic Police, said that the entrance to Sharjah from Dubai on Emirates Road has been an issue for almost two years now.

“In the past few days, we have seen four accidents involving trucks, which all resulted in deaths in that area. The problem is that it is a bottleneck, the seven lanes converge into three lanes when entering Sharjah,” he said.

He explained that the problem lies within the lanes, which suddenly decrease in number, forcing trucks to merge into a single lane with other other smaller vehicles.

The accidents took place on January 21, 23, 24 and 25, he said.

He said another issue is Sharjah’s truck restriction timings, which leads to trucks parking on the side of the road, creating more traffic.

“In my opinion, the solution to this issue would be that there should be road expansions to increase the number of lanes in that area, and remove the truck restriction timings,” he said.

He added that Dubai Traffic Police and the Roads and Transport Authourity were in the problem area a few days ago, monitoring the traffic flow and checking if trucks were keeping to their lanes.

“In four hours, we fined more than 3,900 trucks for not abiding by lane discipline, and the trucks caused a tailback for about 6km because of the bottleneck,” Col Al Mazroui said.

The latest of these accidents was a three-vehicle crash that killed an Emirati man on Monday.

Col Al Mazroui said that the incident took place at around 10am, “The incident involved a 4x4 car, which the deceased was driving, and two trucks,” he said.

The Emirati driver crashed into the truck in front of him, which had stopped because of traffic. The impact of the accident caused the truck to slide and crash into another truck, he said.
