His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Ruler of Sharjah, has instructed that some streets in Sharjah be named after Palestinian martyrs of the Intifada. This is part of the street naming and numbering that is being undertaken in Sharjah emirate, said Ebeid bin Ahmed Al Tunaiji, director of the Town Planning and Survey Department.
He said that Dr Sheikh Sultan had instructed that the names of the uprising martyrs top the list of street names in a bid to honour the heroic role of those martyrs and express solidarity with the Palestinians in the occupied territories.
Al Tunaiji noted that a number of streets in Al Majaz area had been named after Palestinian martyrs such as: "Ezz El Din Al Qassam", which was chosen for one of the area's main streets.
The name "Intifada" was chosen for the road that links Al Khan and Corniche Roads with Khaled Lagoon. A main road leading to Al Qasba Canal was named after Mohammed Al Durra, the Palestinian boy who was shot dead as he took shelter with his father from Israeli bullets.
