Islamic countries have announced the first day of Ramadan 2025. While most countries will mark March 1 as the first day of Ramadan, in some countries it falls on March 2. Here's how the moonsighting and related announcements were made across the world:   

Morocco confirms first day of Ramadan

The Kingdom of Morocco officially announces that Sunday, March 2, is the first day of the holy month of Ramadan, due to the lack of confirmation of the sighting of the crescent moon Friday evening.

Japan announces first day of Ramadan


The Ruyat Hilal Committee Japan announced on Friday that the first day of Ramadan 1446 AH will be on Sunday, March 2, as the crescent moon was not sighted in Japan on February 28.

Saudi Arabia prepares for crescent moon sighting

The Noor Al Falak Association, in collaboration with Qassim Municipality and Al-Rass Governorate, will sight the Ramadan crescent at 5 pm in Al Qasha Al Bari Park on February 28, 2025.

Philippines announces first day of Ramadan

The Philippines has officially announced that Sunday, March 2, will be the first day of Ramadan, though the crescent moon sighting has not been confirmed.

The National Commission on Muslim Filipinos stated that the crescent moon was not sighted, confirming that fasting for Ramadan will begin on March 2, 2025.

Australian PM Albanese extends Ramadan wishes

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has conveyed his warm greetings to Muslims as they begin the holy month of Ramadan.

“Ramadan Mubarak to all Australians of the Muslim faith,” he said.

Albanese acknowledged the diverse customs observed during Ramadan across Australia while emphasising the shared values of the holy month. “Ramadan is a time of strength through discipline, compassion through abstinence, and renewal through faith,” he noted.

He highlighted the significance of self-reflection, charity, and community, adding, “Through fasting, worship, and nightly gatherings, Ramadan fosters unity and reinforces the bonds that connect Muslim communities.”

Australia announces first day of Ramadan

Australia has officially declared that Friday, February 28, marks the last day of Sha'ban, and Saturday, March 1, will be the first day of Ramadan.

The announcement was made by the Grand Mufti of Australia, Dr. Ibrahim Abu Mohamad, in coordination with the Australian Fatwa Council, the Federal Council of Imams, and the Council of Fatwa and Sharia Arbitration.

Due to its geographical location and time zone advantage, Australia is often among the first countries to declare the start of Ramadan based on lunar calculations.

Moon sighting details

Following consultations with the Australian Fatwa Council, the Grand Mufti confirmed the moon sighting timings for key cities:

  • Sydney: Sunset on Friday, February 28, at 7:32 pm (AEST), with the new moon setting at 7:44 pm, remaining visible for 12 minutes.

  • Perth: Sunset at 6:52 pm(AWST), with the new moon setting at 7:08 PM, visible for 16 minutes.

Given these observations, Ramadan 1446H (2025) will officially begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025.

The first night of Ramadan and the Taraweeh prayer will take place on Friday, February 28, after Isha prayer.
