Doctors from Rashid Hospital succeeded in saving the life of a patient who had multiple perforations in his small bowel and colon due to liposuction conducted earlier at another hospital.
The patient came to Rashid Hospital in November complaining of severe abdominal pain after undergoing liposuction at a private hospital.
Through a series of medical examinations doctors found out the patient was suffering from septic shock as a result of bacteria poisoning, which was also causing a drop in his vital signs.
An X-ray showed suspicion of bowel perforations, so they proceeded for an emergency surgery where he was found to have multiple perforations in the small bowel and colon with severe contamination.
During the surgery, the doctors closed the punctures.
Following the first surgery, the patient was transferred to the ICU. After he was stable he underwent a second surgery to decrease the effect of the contamination.
The patient required continued ICU admission and his abdominal wall couldn’t be closed. So he was referred to the plastic surgery department to take care of the defect. Multiple plastic surgery procedures were required to successfully close the abdominal wall.
The patient needed almost a month of hospital stay and he was discharged in good general condition in January.
