Funds to be used to purchase blood sugar testing machines for thalassemia patients with diabetes
Dubai:
The Thalassemia Centre under the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has received a donation of Dh50,000 from the Beit Al Khair Society to procure blood sugar testing machines for thalassemia patients with diabetes.
Thalassaemia is an inherited blood disorder which makes the body produce an abnormal form of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. This results in excessive destruction of red blood cells leading to anaemia.
The Thalassemia Centre is the Emirate’s only dedicated centre to manage the condition.
Dr Khawla Bel Houl, Director of the Thalassemia Centre, received the cheque from Abdeen Taher Al Awadi, General Manager of Beit Al Khair Society. Bel Houl praised the initiative which reflects the society’s efforts to support thalassemic patients and help them cope with the disease.
