Duo accused of breaking flat door, stealing cash & valuables, assaulting 4 policemen & suicide bid
Dubai Two tourists have been accused of attempted suicide and assaulting policemen who apprehended them for trespassing into a flat and stealing Dh84,000 in cash, gold, jewellery and electronics.
The Georgian tourists, 23-year-old J.S. and 25-year-old G.A., were said to have forced their way into an Indian couple’s flat and stole money, gold and diamond items and two digital cameras in December.
The duo assaulted four policemen when they were apprehending them, according to records, and then they slit their own wrists in a bid to commit suicide.
Prosecutors accused J.S. and G.A. of stealing, trespassing into the Indians’ flat and breaking its door.
The suspects pleaded guilty and admitted that they stole from the flat when they appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance. According to the charge sheet, prosecutors accused the duo of stealing Dh6,000 in cash, Dh76,000 worth of valuables and two cameras worth Dh2,000. They were also referred to the Dubai Misdemeanours Court where they will be tried for attempted suicide and assaulting police officers.
“We did not steal at night. It was daytime when we broke into the flat. Yes, we destroyed the door,” J.S. told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi.
G.A. asked the court for mercy and leniency.
An Indian man claimed to prosecutors that he left his flat at 4pm and when he returned in the evening, he discovered the burglary at 7.45pm.
“The door’s flat was broken down. The suspects had entered the bedroom and stolen the valuables and cash from the wardrobe. They also stole two cameras,” he testified to prosecutors.
A policeman claimed to prosecutors that primary interrogations revealed the duo’s involvement in the burglary. He said the suspects were arrested shortly after that.
J.S. and G.A. are scheduled to appear before the Misdemeanours Court soon.
Presiding judge Al Shamsi will hand out a ruling in the theft case on April 27.
