Ajman: Ajman Police have arrested 15 people for possessing sharp-edged weapons as part of its efforts to crack down on carriers of these weapons.

According to Brigadier Ali Abdullah Alwan, Director-General of Ajman Police, campaigns are being stepped up against people in possession of these weapons and sharp objects, especially juvenile delinquents and those with criminal records.

"Police are now carrying out inspection campaigns to crack down on those law violators who threaten and endanger others' lives," Brigadier Alwan said.

He added that those who are found in possession of these weapons, and in violation of the laws of the country regarding this, will be strictly punished so as to put an end to dangerous practices.

Worrying trend

Lieutenant Colonel Dr Salah Obaid Al Goul, Director of Law Respect Culture Office at the General Secretariat Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, said the spread of these weapons was considered a new problem in UAE society.

He underlined the major role played by the Ministry of Interior and its security and police services to combat this dangerous trend and its associated crimes.

"People found in possession of [sharp weapons] will be held legally accountable and subject to penal punishments stipulated in the Penal Code," Lt Col Al Goul said. He added that those who commit physical assaults using sharp-edged weapons would receive a term of three to seven years in prison if convicted, which is based on the degree of disability and physical injury.

Anyone who assaults another person and causes death will receive a sentence of 10 years in jail.

Lt Col Al Goul warned against the use of these weapons and said anyone found in possession of sharp weapons will be punished.

He said the presence of these weapons in the possession of a perpetrator would be held against him as concrete evidence of his intent to commit a crime.
