Sharjah: Sharjah Police on Thursday arrested seven street dealers for assaulting a man when he tried to sell phone credit in their usual territory.
"The commercial areas were divided into sections, and each gang sold phone credit in a certain territory that was assigned to them. Any other dealer who tried to use their spot also to sell phone credit was beaten up," said an official at Sharjah Police.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at Sharjah Police said they were aware of these illegal activities taking place and have launched a campaign to stop dealers from illegally selling phone cards and other items on the side of the road.
"The victim filed a police complaint after he was assaulted by the seven Asian men, and when they were detained we found that all the suspects were living illegally in the country and had run away from their sponsors," the police official said.
The CID official added that its campaign extended to commercial, industrial and residential areas and they particularly focused on illegal dealers selling phone credit, as they are usually associated with gangs.
