No escape for drunk man harassing sleeping residents

Dubai: You can't escape the long arm of the law ... or, it seems, the keen nose of a German shepherd.

Thanks to Dak 1, a four-year-old police dog, a worker was tracked and arrested for breaking into two villas, and jumping onto the beds of the residents while they were asleep.

You would think it was a planned operation or an attempted robbery, but the 30 year old was under the influence of alcohol when he randomly decided to sneak into two residents' villas in Dubai Sports City at midnight and surprise them with his "stinky smelling presence", said Lieutenant-Colonel Ahmad Humaid Al Merri, Director of the Criminal Investigation section at Dubai Police.

The first couple, who were asleep when they found the worker on their bed, managed to rip off part of his undershirt as the husband confronted him before he escaped.

He then went to another villa in the area and repeated the same actions. The second victim also resisted. None of the victims could identify the man.

Dak 1, who has been training with Dubai Police since he was a puppy, sniffed out the suspect from the piece of shirt. He tracked the footsteps of the worker, reaching a cabin 2-3km away from the residential area.

According to Al Merri, police have come across a few cases in the past where drunken people were walking on the streets aimlessly and in some cases they were completely naked, but this incident is a first.

"The suspect was...arrested for trespassing into other's residences," he said.
