Dubai: Dubai’s top traffic prosecutor has warned drivers against jumping red lights or violating traffic rules on roads shared with Dubai Tram in light of a new judgement that the Dubai Traffic Misdemeanours Court handed against a driver who jumped a red light at a Dubai Tram intersection.

The 32-year-old Asian driver jumped a red light at one of the intersections without causing an accident on Al Sufouh road in January.

Drivers using their vehicles around Dubai Tram’s junctions, crossings and intersections in the areas of Al Sufouh, Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence should drive attentively and cautiously in order to maintain the highest traffic safety standards, said Prosecutor General Salah Bu Farousha, Head of Dubai Traffic Public Prosecution on Wednesday.

“People driving around the Dubai Tram track should do so carefully and lawfully … otherwise they face stern and restrictive punishments. According to pertinent laws, traffic violators could face up to a Dh30,000 fine and suspension of their driving licence for up to a year. Punishments are subject to doubling in case the violation is repeated,” said Bu Farousha.

Traffic police fined the violator Dh3,000 which, according to Bu Farousha, the violator did not pay and appealed against it before the Traffic Public Prosecution.

“Traffic prosecutors looked into the driver’s objection and referred his plea to the traffic court. The presiding judge confirmed the fine against the driver and also suspended his driving licence for one month. As soon as the ruling came out, we communicated with the Roads and Transport Authority and started the procedures of having his licence suspended,” said Bu Farousha.

Stiff penalties await motorists who disobey rules governing traffic on roads shared with Dubai Tram.

Signs and pavement markings are put up all along the 10.6km tram network.

Traffic authorities take all the necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all road users.
