The accused, Y.W., was also charged with forging a Singaporean passport

Dubai: A Malaysian woman will be spending 15 months in jail after a court found her guilty of forging six credit cards which she used in a shopping spree at the Dubai Mall.

Prosecutors also accused the 26-year-old woman of forging the entry and exit stamps on a Singapore passport which she used as proof of her identity when she used the credit cards to purchase goods and electronic items from the mall.

The accused, Y.W., was also charged with forging a Singaporean passport.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced her to one year's imprisonment for forging a governmental stamp on the passport and for forging credit cards and using them to purchase items. She was given an additional three-month sentence for attempting to swindle a watch shop.

The accused will be deported after she serves out her jail term.

When the accused appeared before the court, she said: "I am not guilty on the charge of forging and using the Singaporean passport. Yet, I admit that I forged the credit cards and used them to buy a laptop and a mobile phone. I am guilty also on the charge of attempting to buy a wristwatch."

A mall security guard testified that he foiled the defendant's attempt to flee by jumping into a taxi.

"A shop attendant informed me that the accused tried to buy a Dh15,000-worth wristwatch but he suspected that the credit card was forged.

"I followed her for a while and stopped her the minute when she [hailed] a taxi. We foiled her escape attempt and called the police," claimed the security guard.
