Woman admits taking dangerous drug but says she did not know that it was banned

Dubai: A female clerk and a waiter on Wednesday pleaded not guilty and denied charges of possessing 0.16 grammes of drugs for trafficking purposes.

Prosecutors accused the 30-year-old Filipina clerk and her 25-year-old compatriot waiter with possessing two pouches of methamphetamine drug for purposes of trade.

"No, that's not true… I am innocent," argued the waiter, A.S., when he defended himself before the Dubai Court of First Instance.

The Filipina, S.T., pleaded innocent and denied the charge of possessing and trafficking drugs.

According to the charge sheet, the Public Prosecution also charged her with consuming amphetamine.

"I did consume that substance but I was not aware that it is banned," she said in her defence before Presiding Judge Fahmi Mounir.

An Emirati captain at Dubai Police's Anti-Narcotics Department told the court that an informant alerted them that the suspects possessed drugs which they intended to sell.

The case was adjourned to next month to allow the court to assign a lawyer to defend the female clerk.

Meanwhile, the waiter's lawyer asked the judge to cross examine the prosecution witnesses.
