Dubai: A man and a woman who stole a diamond ring worth Dh500,000 from Souq Madinat Jumeirah, have been arrested.

Dubai Police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) arrested two Asians, E.K.M. and A.Y.H., in a space of 24 hours for stealing the diamond ring from a jewellery store.

When the police arrived at the scene of the theft, an Asian shop assistant told them that around 9.45pm, a man and a woman walked into the shop and said they wanted to buy some jewellery.

The assistant showed them a ring with a large diamond worth half a million dirhams. The couple seemed to like it and asked the shop assistant to pack the ring in a box. While doing so, the duo distracted the seller and gave him back the empty box.

The man told the assistant that he would get the money from his sister who was in an adjacent shop.

The woman stayed in the store for a while looking at jewellery. She then followed the man without the seller noticing it.

After 15 minutes, when the seller checked the box, which had contained the ring, he realised the ring had been stolen.

Within an hour, the police was able to reveal the identity of the man after going back to security procedures followed by the shop. The man had been deported for possession of mind-altering substances. He re-entered the country with a new name and passport.

On March 22, the CID team received tip-off on the location of the two suspects, who were at a hotel in Naif.

The suspects confessed that they had shipped the ring to their home country. However, the CID team doubted their story. They searched their luggage and recovered the ring.

The suspects were detained and were referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation.
