Germany's Hans Werner Werth and co-driver Dr Ursula Schmitt are heading for a comfortable victory in the Rally Al Khaleej which concludes in Abu Dhabi tonight.

The pair extended their lead during the 280-km special stage from Al Ain to Fujairah which claimed two of the classic cars as casualties.

It also saw UAE's Saeed Thani finish fourth on the day, but slip to fifth place overall.

Driving his 1955 Jaguar XK 140, Werth finished the stage in second place on Sunday behind the 1971 Mercedes Benz 350SL of Peter and Martina Bockemuehl. The 1973 BMW Coupe 3.0 CS of Willi and Christina Mayer was in the third position.

The 1970 AC Cobra of Dietr Krauschmidt and Bernd Freund and the MG TC Roadster of fellow-German Lebrecht Tiede failed to complete the stage because of mechanical problems.

The penultimate stage of 190km from Fujairah to Dubai, was being followed by an overnight halt at the Al Khatim desert camp before the final stage takes to cars to the finish in Abu Dhabi tonight.
