Dubai: Sampuran Banerjee and Janhavi Agarwal topped the boy’s and girls’ under-19 categories at the end of the 2017 Al Nasr Leisureland UAE National Day Squash Championships that concluded at the club courts last weekend.

Banerjee blanked Hrithik Gandhi 11-5, 11-7 and 11-3, while Agarwal went on to take the girls’ crown while easily getting the better of Krishna Gandhi 11-3, 11-2, 11-5 in the final.

Abdullah Mohammad triumphed in the boy’s under-15 with a smooth 11-7, 11-5, 11-9 win against Ishan Malani, who tried to fight back in the final game. But, Mohammad stayed focused and broke away for the last two points to clinch the title.

The boy’s under-13 and girls under-13 finals were played in contrasting styles with Abdul Rahman Abou Zaid easily getting past Yousuf Mohammad 11-4, 11-7 and 11-4 for the boy’s under-13, while Jahanavi Dhavala fought well against Yassmin Gad before going down 1-3 (11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 11-9) in the girls contest.

Al Nasr Leisureland’s Operations Manager CT Matthew was joined by Syed Khwaja from sponsors Head to present the prizes to the winners and runners-up of the various categories after the competition.

Sponsored by Head and organised by ANL squash coach Faheem Khan, the annual tournament was held to mark the 46th UAE National Day. Al Nasr Leisureland has been regularly organising squash events, especially for juniors to ensure the development of the sport at grassroots level.

The boy’s under-9 final was an engrossing affair as well with Dhruv Monga fighting his way back from a game down to win 7-11, 11-9, 11-9 and 11-6 for the title. English Private School student Fiza Faheem Khan punched well above her weight to be crowned champion in the girls’ under-9 with a swift 11-3, 11-6, 11-4 win over Fatima Mohammad.

Dhruv Monga went on to claim a double later in the evening when he defeated Thomas De Mascarel 11-1, 11-2, 11-6 in the boy’s under-11 final, while Shiven Seth had to dig in deep for a 11-7, 11-8, 12-10 win over Ruhan Roy in the boy’s under-10 final.
