Abu Dhabi: Walter Zenga, a familiar face to the UAE football fans after his spells in charge of Al Ain, Al Nasr, Al Jazira and Al Shaab in the Arabian Gulf League, has become the new head coach of English Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It represents an excellent and surprising move for the former Italy goalkeeper, whose last job ended after only three months in February when Al Shaab parted company with him by mutual consent.

Zenga, 56, replaces Kenny Jacket, who was sacked late on Friday night after three years in charge following the club’s takeover by China’s Fosun International group last week.

“We’re delighted to appoint Walter as the new head coach of Wolves,” said Jeff Shi, the Championship club’s new main director. “He has an excellent track record, both as a player and as a coach, and a wealth of experience he can bring to his new role at Wolves. Walter is a hugely passionate personality, who lives for football and is fiercely determined to succeed in everything that he does.”

Zenga, who has previously managed Steaua Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade and Palermo, takes his first coaching role in England

Capped 58 times by his country, Zenga was in attendance at Wolves’ pre-season friendly on Saturday against Swansea City but will formally take charge of his new side on Monday.

As a player, Zenga spent 13 seasons at Internazionale before joining Sampdoria in 1994.
