Osama Al Shafar, former FNC Member and President of Asian Cycling Confederation, dies in accident

Abu Dhabi: Osama Al Shafar, former member of the Federal National Council, businessman, and President of the Asian Cycling Confederation, has passed away following a tragic accident in Uzbekistan.

Born in 1974, Al Shafar held numerous prominent sports leadership roles. He previously served as President of the UAE Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation before assuming the presidency of the Asian federation. He later went on to lead both the UAE and Asian cycling federations and served as Vice-President of the International Cycling Union (UCI). He also held the position of Vice-President of the International Relations Committee at the Olympic Council of Asia and was a member of the Asian Sports Federations Committee.

Al Shafar, who received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Sports Sciences in Uzbekistan, was the recipient of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Creative Sports Award in 2018, the Sports Achievement Award, and the Golden Order of Merit in 2009 from the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness.

Abdullah Rashid Al Hammadi  is an accomplished Emirati journalist with over 45 years of experience in both Arabic and English media. He currently serves as the Abu Dhabi Bureau Chief fo Gulf News. Throughout his career, Al Hammadi has conducted high-profile interviews with prominent leaders including UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and key Arab figures such as the late Yasser Arafat and former presidents of Yemen and Egypt. He has reported on major historical events such as the Iran-Iraq war, the liberation of Kuwait, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the establishment of the Palestinian Authority. His work continues to shape and influence journalism in the UAE and the wider Arab world.
