TIHS start on a winning note
Rohail D'Souza of Our Own English High School Dubai continued his scoring spree, but could not stop defending champions The Indian High School (TIHS) from a 63-48 win on the second day of the Xth Modern Trophy inter-school basketball tournament yesterday.
D'Souza, who topscored in his team's win over the New Filipino High School on the opening day, was on song for Our Own with 26 points, but found the overall game of the defending champions too hot to handle as the match progressed.
Making the difference for Indian High was their highest scorer Muzammil Hussain Shafiq as he helped himself to 22 points.
Later in the evening, TIHS notched up their second win with a 62-20 victory against The Millennium School to keep their cent per cent record intact. Leading the charge for TIHS was Jimmy Gervais, while young Abhishek Nanda secured 14 points for Millennium in a losing cause.
Newcomers Emirates National School Sharjah, who were a last-minute replacement for St Mary's Dubai, started their campaign on a winning note with a fighting 32-27 win against Emirates English Speaking School.
The freshers had a winning debut, thanks to Zuhair Hamza's 12 points as they snatched the lead in the fourth quarter.
Westminster School started in a ruthless frame giving no chance for DPS cagers to get near scoring.
Milad Antoine ended with 16 points, while George Raisem had eight including a couple of three-pointers.
In the lone girls' match played, defending champions The Modern High School defeated DPS 53-10. Lanky Annika Ambotty served Modern High well with a tally of 28 points.
