Fleming quits over pay row

London: John McEnroe and Peter Fleming won four Wimbledon doubles titles together but their financial fortunes as BBC pundits at the tournament couldn't be more different.

McEnroe is the biggest name on the BBC roster and gets a pay packet to match, earning around £10,000 (Dh58,697) a day for his fortnight's work despite the cash-strapped corporation needing to make drastic cuts across the board.

In contrast, Fleming has quit having had to make do for the whole tournament with around the same payment. This huge disparity in remuneration is irking some of the BBC team, although there is an acknowledgement of McEnroe's brilliance in the commentary booth.

Fleming, a regular analyst for Sky Sports' tennis coverage, thought the paltry BBC payment didn't make it worthwhile for him to be there, even though he lives nearby in Richmond.

A BBC spokesperson said they don't comment about the money paid to commentators.

There could also be a changing of the guard in the BBC box for the women's final with Andrew Cotter set to call the match alongside Lindsay Davenport , not Tracy Austin.

There are those within the BBC who regard Davenport as the more pertinent pundit, but Austin won't take kindly to being deposed.
