Shuttle Time Dubai sets up exciting finale

Dubai: Team Yonex will play Prime Star and Team Victor B will meet NSNL-SD B in the first and second tier finals of the Shuttle Time Dubai Badminton Club Championships at Dubai Sports World on Friday from 5pm.

In last Friday’s semi-finals Group A winners Team Yonex beat fourth-placed NSNL-SD A 3-2, while runners-up Prime Star beat third-placed Team Victor 3-2.

In the second tier semi-finals, things weren’t as straightforward however. Group A Level B runners-up Team Victor B stunned table toppers Newbreed B 4-1, and Group B runners-up NSNL-SD B shocked group leaders Friday Smashers 3-2.

160 players from 15 teams have competed for the title over the last three weeks. Teams have played in two groups, with two pools of five in Group A and one pool of five in Group B, contesting across five categories — men’s singles, men’s doubles, mixed doubles, women’s doubles and masters doubles (40 and above).

The Club Championships are held under the umbrella of Shuttle Time Dubai, a grassroots development programme that looks to spread the game locally to ensure Dubai’s four-year agreement to host the World Superseries Finals (from 2014 to 2017) bears a legacy.
