Abu Dhabi: Kenya's Patrick Makau will be favourite to win the $300,000 (Dh1.1 million) prize in the men's event of the Zayed International Marathon on Thursday.

Makau, who has the best timing over the distance at 58:52 minutes, was the world champion in 2007 in Brazil.

Makau told Gulf News he was excited to participate for the first time in the Zayed marathon.

"I heard about it from my colleagues back home and decided to come and take part after I was told about the quality field of runners," he said.

The $300,000 prize up for grabs was also tempting, the runner said.

"I am ready for the race after a good preparation period back home.

"I am in my best form and I am determined to win the race despite the fact that there are some very strong and able runners who will give me a tough time like Sammy [Kitwara] and Micath Kogo, the world record holder of ten kilometres."

Pressure

Makau hopes pressure from other runners will bring out the best in him.

"These pressures are part of the game," he added.

The 22-year-old Kenyan runner is planning to take part in the London Olympic Games in 2012.

"I am planning to be [part] of my country's team for the Olympic marathon competition and I am looking forward to achieving some brilliant results in the coming period which will increase my chances of making the team," he said.
