India’s Mirabai Chanu could be in line for a surprise gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after it emerged on Monday that Chinese weightlifter Zhihui Hou — who originally claimed the gold in the women’s 49kg category at Tokyo International Forum — will be tested by anti-doping authorities.
If she fails the test, she sill be disqualified and Chanu will be upgraded to gold.
“She has been asked to stay in Tokyo and the test will be done. The test is definitely happening,” a source said.
Zhihui claimed the title with total of 210kg and created a new Olympic record. Chanu lifted a total of 202kg (87kg in snatch and 115kg in clean and jerk) during her four lifts. Indonesia’s Windy Cantika Aisah took bronze with a total of 194kg.
