Dubai: Japan’s motorsport scene has accelerated with a remarkable 20 per cent increase in licensed drivers over the past five years, signaling a surge in passion and participation that perfectly aligns with the FIA’s vision for the future.

To strengthen this momentum, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is visiting Japan this week to deepen collaboration on automotive innovation and sustainable motorsport growth.

The visit highlights Japan’s pivotal role as a global leader in mobility innovation — from cutting-edge smart city initiatives and alternative fuel research to its world-class motorsport infrastructure. During his stay, Ben Sulayem will meet Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Japan Sports Agency Commissioner Koji Murofushi, and Minister for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Hiromasa Nakano to discuss partnerships that advance these shared goals.

Becon of innovation

Hosted by the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF), the FIA President will tour key facilities including the City Circuit and JAF Control Tower, showcasing Japan’s investment in urban racing and motorsport technology.

“Japan continues to be a beacon of technological leadership and motorsport passion, with innovative mobility solutions that enhance lives worldwide,” Ben Sulayem said. “This visit offers an important opportunity to build on the growth we’re seeing and align our efforts for sustainable, inclusive motorsport.”

Japan’s surge in motorsport participation is matched by record crowds at the 2025 Formula 1 Grand Prix in Suzuka, reflecting a vibrant and expanding motorsport culture.

Strong support

Meanwhile, Ben Sulayem has secured strong support for his re-election bid, with letters from 29 Mena and 36 American FIA member clubs praising his leadership on transparency, governance, and sustainability. Under his presidency, the FIA has also achieved its best financial results in nearly a decade, returning to a €4.7 million operating surplus in 2024 after a €24 million loss in 2021.

Ben Sulayem remains focused on empowering regions, growing grassroots motorsport, and leading global discussions on sustainable mobility and intelligent transport.
