Abu Dhabi: Overseas fighters dominated the open day of the Abu Dhabi Jiu-Jitsu Grand Slam being held at the Mubadala Arena on Friday.

Brazilian Thalison Soares won gold in the male purple adult 56kg category beating compatriot Johnif Rocha on advantage points 3-0 after a 2-2 deadlock. The third place was bagged by UAE’s Hamad Al Beloushi.

Australia’s Levi Jones-leary defeated Guilherme Rocha of Brazil on advantage points 2-0 to claim gold in the male brown adult 77kg. Alexssandro Sodre of Brazil got the better off Poland’s Pawel Kozlowski 2-0 on points, to pocket bronze.

UAE’s Maha Al Hinaai, making her debut in the female purple adult 70kg category, couldn’t finish on the podium. She lost to eventual winner Yara Kakish of Jordan in the semi-final contest. In the third place match-up, Al Hinaai lost to Ireland’s Caroline Prill.

The gold for UAE came in the male purple masters 1 85kg category when Saoud Al Hammadi defeated Jordan’s Mohammad Al Khatib on points. UAE had Saeed Al Jneibi to clinch bronze in the same category.

Another gold for UAE came in the male purple master 2 77kg when Jasem Mubarak tamed Kazakhstan’s Arlan Shabdarbayev authoritatively by submission 6-0. The bronze went to Aurelio Uni, who got a walk over from fellow Colombian Jose Madrid.
