Dubai: Al Wasl emerged champions in the Shaikh Zayed Cup for volleyball after defeating Al Shabab in straight sets, 3-0. They won 25-22, 25-18 and 25-15 in the last match of the tournament to bag six points from three wins against Al Nasr, Al Jazira and Al Shabab.

This is the first time in six years that Al Wasl won the title. The last time Al Wasl won a title was in 2003 when they won the President's Cup.

The top four teams in the league play in the Zayed Cup, which was earlier called the FA cup. The name was changed three seasons ago.

Ebrahim Abdul Malek, secretary-general of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare, and Mohammad Jalfar, chairman, board of directors of the volleyball association, presented the trophy and gold medals to the winners.

On their way to the title, Al Wasl defeated league champions Al Nasr 3-2 in their first match and beat Al Jazira by a similar margin in the second match.

The winning squad comprised Hasan Rajab, Saeed Rabea, Michael Jason, Ali Shahin, Murad Abdullah, Hussain Mohammad, Haydar Mohammad, Mohammad Shaikhi, Walid Thani, Ahmad Khalil, Obaidan Farhan, Abdullah Saleh and Ali Abdullah.

Meanwhile, Al Nasr meet Al Jazira tomorrow in the President's Cup final at the Al Ain indoor sports hall.
