Jordi Menkhorst sends GEMS into semis

Defending champions beat Jumeirah College 54-26 in basketball quarter-finals

Dubai: Jordi Menkhorst top-scored as defending champions GEMS World Academy booked their spot in the semi-finals of the third annual UAE High School Basketball Championships at Al Nasr Club on Friday.

GEMS thrashed Jumeirah College 54-26 thanks to five three-pointers from Menkhorst, who scored a total 24 points.

Elsewhere, newly-crowned 2014 Emirates Coastal Conference Champions American School of Dubai (ASD) beat International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi (Iscad) 51-40. Iscad managed to keep up and finally took a one-point lead after three quarters. However, they ran out of steam in the final quarter, managing just four points to ASD’s 16-point tally. Hassan Esmail top-scored for ASD as he chipped in with 12 points, and 10 rebounds.

In the other quarter-finals, International School of Choueifat Sharjah (ISCS) cruised past Dubai College (DC) 46–25, with Samay Ramchandani top-scoring with 18 points.

Meanwhile, Lycee Francais International Georges Pompidou (LGP) recorded the most impressive win of the round, defeating the New Indian Model School (Nims) 63-36.

Adham Gaama of LGP was voted player of the week after his 24-point and 17-rebound outing.

The semi-finals will take place at the Rashid Bin Hamdan Hall on February 22 as LGP take on ASD at 11am, and GWA square off against ISCS at 12.30pm.
