Dubai: Godolphin unearthed an Epsom Derby hope at Newmarket on Wednesday, when True Story ran out an imperious winner of the Listed Fielden Stakes, one of many prominent trials held at the meeting.

Ridden by 2014 Dubai World Cup-winning jockey Silvestre de Sousa, the Darley-bred son of German stallion Manduro annihilated his rivals by seven lengths to earn a 10-1 vote for the Epsom Classic on June 7.

Qatar Racing’s Obliterator, making only his second career start for Ger Lyons, finished runner-up, with Richard Hannon’s Truth Or Dare a further six lengths back in third.

On a promising day for the Godolphin stable, Majeyda asserted her 1,000 Guineas credentials with a big run in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket, despite finishing third behind the favourite Sandiva.

The daughter of Dubai World Cup hero Street Cry appeared to have every chance at the two furlong mark, but found favourite Sandiva, ridden by ex-Godolphin jockey Frankie Dettori, doing the better work at the busy end.

She was also denied the runner-up position on a photo by Euro Charline, but that did not disappoint her trainer Charlie Appleby. He said: “I was very happy with her performance and I would hope she will be suited to the step back up to a mile.

“We have got another filly in the Guineas but we will see how this filly comes out of the race first.”

Sandiva, who is trained by North Yorkshire-based handler Richard Fahey, was slashed to 16/1 from 25/1 for the 1000 Guineas (May 4).

“Frankie is sure she will stay a mile and he spent half the race trying to switch her off and get her in,” said Fahey.

Magnus Maximus, ridden by Pat Dobbs, landed the £100,000 Tattersalls Millions 3-Y-O Sprint at long odds of 25-1.

Trainer Richard Hannon said of the winner: “That was a pleasant surprise as I thought six furlongs would be too sharp for him. We felt he wants a mile. He travelled great and never looked like getting beaten.

“He has won a very nice race there and we can diversify with him a bit. We will get him home first.”

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, was denied a win on the opening day of the Craven meeting when Mushir was beaten by a head by Shifting Power in the Listed European Free Handicap over seven furlongs.
