Godolphin's trainer Saeed Bin Surour is poised to add another win in the Godolphin Mile with the classy four-year-old Desert Party.
The event has been dominated by Bin Surour since it was introduced in 1996 with the stable capturing the event an impressive eight times from 14 runnings.
Desert Party, who is by 2002 Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry (Ire), created a strong early impression, winning twice at the carnival last year.
He then went on to finish a brave second behind stable mate Regal Ransom — who stole a break early in the straight — in the UAE Derby.
Those performances were encouraging enough for His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to decide Desert Party should tackle the Kentucky Derby.
Unfortunately, he did not handle the sloppy track and finished 14th of 20. It later was discovered he was hampered by a chip in his left front ankle, which required surgery.
He was impressive in his first start in the ten months since the Derby, winning over 1,200m at Meydan, and he is sure to relish the extra 400m.
Bin Surour also puts the polish on Skysurfers and Calming Influence and there is every chance he can repeat last year's one-two finish by Two Step Salsa and Gayego.
Skysurfers, a four-year-old by E Dubai, was impressive winning on fibresand in his debut at Southwell but really garnered attention as he thrashed the classy Eagle Mountain over 1,600m at Meydan on February 19.
Settled further back and finishing fifth behind Cat Junior in the Burj Nahaar on Super Thursday, he certainly is capable of bouncing back.
Calming Influence raced consistently during the Carnival last year and, like most Bin Surour-trained horses, runs to his best on Tapeta.
Danehill Dancer five-year-old Forgotten Voice has shown up in stronger races in England and he did catch the eye in his first start at Meydan when a fast-finishing second behind Dubai World Cup contender Gloria De Campeao.
Dubai-based trainer Doug Watson has been a model of consistency during this year's campaign and is proven at Meydan as his Kalahari Gold won over 1,400m on February 19 before a fast-finishing second over one mile on Super Thursday.
Kalahari Gold failed in this race last year after showing promise but clearly is better suited on the Tapeta surface.
Selections:
1. Desert Party
2.Skysurfers
3.Forgotten Voice
4.Kalahari Gold
