Dubai: Stefan Friborg, the owner of the 2010 Dubai World Cup winner Gloria de Campeao, will sponsor the ninth meeting of the Dubai World Cup Carnival on Saturday when his Stud Estrela Energia puts its name to a high-class Meydan card worth $1.1m.

Featuring the $250,000 (Dh918,274) Group 2 Zabeel Mile and the $200,000 Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy, the meeting is the ninth of the 2013 Carnival, with only Super Saturday and the Dubai World Cup meeting to follow.

“As the first winner of the 2010 Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse, I am proud to once again have the opportunity to sponsor and contribute to the sport of kings. We at Stud Estrela Energia wish Meydan all the best for the remainder of the 2012/2013 racing season as well as the 2013 Dubai World Cup,” said Friborg, who maintains a string of horses in Dubai.

Malih Al Basti, Meydan Group Board Member and Chairman of the Meydan Racing Committee said: “It is fantastic to welcome Stud Estrela Energia to Meydan. Stefan Friborg is a valued supporter of racing in Dubai and his colours, which were carried to a memorable victory in the 2010 Dubai World Cup by Gloria de Campeao, will be familiar to racing fans all over the world.

“Mr Friborg made history when he won the first Dubai World Cup to be held at Meydan and I am in no doubt that we will see him continue to build on that achievement in the future.”

Stud Estrela is located just outside Rio De Janeiro in Brazil, 900 metres above sea level, providing perfect weather conditions for training all year round.

The training centre facility has three different tracks with sand, grass and fibre surfaces and is equipped with flood lights to allow horses to acclimatise to the shadows created when racing under artificial lighting conditions. Stud Estrela also races horses in Sweden and Australia.

Admission is free to the public areas of Meydan Racecourse and tickets start at Dh25, gates open at 5pm and the first race starts at 6.30pm.
