Goodwood, England: Ladies are all set to sparkle both on and off the track on Day 3 of Glorious Goodwood where the showpiece race is the £600,000 (Dh2.9 million) Group 1 Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares.

Run over 1,900 metres the race has historically thrown up some colossal contests in the past, the most memorable of which was when Quija Board got the better of Goldrun after a three-furlong stride-for-stride contest between to two superstarts.

Godolphin have yet to lift the trophy but trainer Charlie
Appleby will be hoping that the his two contenders, Wuheida and Sobetsu, can make amends in what looks a mouth-watering renewal of the historic race which dates back to 1840.

There is a third runner in the race with a Dubai connection, the Roger Varian-trained Nezwaah, who represents Major-General Shaikh Ahmad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Chief of Dubai Police and Public Security.

In all, eight horses will face the starter with the Irish-trained Winter, winner of both the English and Irish 1000 Guineas (G1) and the Coronation Stakes (G1), looking the one to beat.

Trained by Aidan O’Brien, Winter steps up to a mile and a quarter for the first time in her career where she is joined by stablemate Hydrangea.

Gosden double-handed

In-form handler John Gosden sends out two highly regarded fillies, the relatively unexposed So Mi Dar and stablemate Shutter Speed, who was last seen finishing Bot. Wuheida and Sobetsu, who both won at the highest level in France, will be ridden by James Doyle and William Buick respectively.

Buick said: “Wuheida’s stepping up to a mile and a quarter, which Charlie has always felt she will benefit from.

“She ran very well in the Falmouth and was entitled to improve for the race, which she has done.

“She ran into a match-fit filly in Roly Poly and she was a good second, we were very happy with that. She just got a bit tired. We were second best on the day, but hopefully she will come on for it, probably more than anything else in the race.”

Sir Michael Stoute runs Breeders’ Cup sensation Queen’s Trust, who was second to Minding in this race last season.

Ladies Day also features two other top contests, the Group 2 Richmond Stakes over 1,200 metres and the Group 3 Lillie Langtry Stakes over 2,800m.
