Godolphin six-year-old heads for Melbourne Cup after coming through trial
Godolphin’s Crime Scene will take his place in the Melbourne Cup on November 3 alongside stablemate Kirklees, despite finishing sixth in one of the major trials for “the race that stops a nation”, The Geelong Cup, won by Leica Ding.
It was always going to be tough for the six-year-old carrying top weight in his first race since July.
With Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle, Crime Scene broke slowly but was soon racing sixth on the inside and improved to third turning for home with every chance.
When asked to quicken by McEvoy the burden of a huge top weight meant he could only keep on at one pace. Nevertheless he stayed the one-and-a-half miles well to finish just over two lengths behind the winner, which suggests he could be suited by the two-mile trip at Flemington.
Godolphin’s Diana Cooper told www.godolphin.com: “Crime Scene ran a good race considering he had been off the course since July. He gave four and a half kilos to the first and second, handled the course well and was not beaten far.
“Kerrin said Crime Scene looked around coming into the straight and otherwise would have been closer. Crime Scene will have a couple of easy weeks leading up to the Emirates Melbourne Cup in which he will hopefully run a big race.”
