Dubai: Ajman Princess will be aiming to prove that the law of averages is not a fallacy, and that after four notable runner-up finishes, she is due a victory in Saturday’s Group 1 Irish Oaks at The Curragh.

A sequence of defeats does not necessarily mean that a victory is guaranteed, but in Ajman Princess’ case, it is not without reason.

The three-year-old daughter of Teofilo has produced some heroic efforts since her racecourse debut in April and deserves her place among the 12 horses contesting the €400,000 Classic.

Her trainer Roger Varian has faith in his trainee and said: “We’ve always liked this filly and although she’s still a maiden, her form is very strong.

“She split Listed winners on her second run at Ascot (Abingdon and Skiffle) and her second in the Ribblesdale showed that she’s a high-level performer.

“Take Even Song (8/11 favourite) out and it has a very open look to it. We thought we’d be best lining up with every chance of finishing in the first three,” he added.

“I think she’s improving — a lot of three-year-old fillies are at this time of year.

“She’s been supplemented and she should be well suited by the track.”

Ajman Princess, who will race in the Epsom Derby winning colours of Shaikh Mohammad Obaid Al Maktoum, will be partnered by her regular rider Andrea Atzeni.

Even Song is the principal hope of Irish handler Aidan O’Brien four runners that also include Munster Oaks winner Pretty Perfect and Epsom Oaks fourth and sixth Somehow and Seventh Heaven.

Even Song is bidding to follow up her victory in the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot and O’Brien said: “She’s in good form. She had a little rest after Ascot and we’ve been happy with her since.

“She seems to handle most types of ground and we are looking forward to running her.”

A strong British challenge is headed by the Hugo Palmer-trained pair of Architecture (Frankie Dettori) and We Are Ninety (Pat Smullen).

Architecture was last seen finishing a noteworthy runner-up to O’Brien’s dual Classic winning filly Minding at Epsom.

“He obviously believes her Epsom performance was greater than Even Song’s at Ascot,” said Palmer.

“Architecture was disappointing at Ascot, but it came less than a fortnight after the Oaks and we’re happy with her going to Ireland.”

Frankie Dettori rides Architecture, while Pat Smullen, aboard Covert Love 12 months ago, gets the leg-up on We Are Ninety for the first time.”
