Rory McIlroy (NI), the 2015 champion and Scottie Scheffler (USA) the defending champion and runner-up in 2021, are both seemingly favourites for today’s (Sunday) semi-finals of the $20 million WGC – DELL Technologies Matchplay Championship at Austin CC, Texas.

Having topped their groups they both won their fourth and fifth matches yesterday (Saturday). McIlroy will play Cameron Young (USA) and Scheffler will play Sam Burns (USA) in the Sunday morning semis with the winners progressing to the Championship Match and the losers contesting the third – fourth Play-off Match.

McIlroy beat Lucas Herbert (AUS) in the Saturday morning last 16 by two holes and then Xander Schauffele (USA) in the quarter-finals by one hole. McIlroy has played 87 holes in the tournament to date, Burns 85, Scheffler 83 and Young 81.

Comeback of the day came from Scheffler who was three down after six holes to two-time Matchplay Champion and former World Number One Jason Day (USA) but turned it round to win 2&1 in the afternoon to progress to the semis.

Scheffler’s record at Austin Country Club is impressive, with a 17-2-0 record over the last three years.
