Sharjah: Sharjah Football Club made history on Sunday, clinching the inaugural AFC Champions League 2 trophy with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Singapore’s Lion City Sailors at Bishan Stadium.

The match was a rollercoaster. Sharjah took the lead in the 74th minute thanks to Firas Belarbi, but the home side fought back with a stoppage-time equaliser from Maxime Lestienne in the 91st minute.

Just when it seemed destined for extra time, Marcus Meloni struck a decisive goal deep into injury time — in the 97th minute — sealing a stunning win for the UAE side.

This marks Sharjah’s first-ever continental title and a major milestone for the club. The tournament itself is new, having replaced the AFC Cup with a revamped format featuring 32 teams from across Asia, split into East and West regions.

Sharjah’s Romanian coach, Cosmin Olaroiu, commended his team’s resilience, calling the victory “a testament to their hard work and belief.”

Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, also extended heartfelt congratulations to President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, on Sharjah Football Club’s AFC Champions League 2 triumph.

He described the club’s continental success as a landmark achievement that brought great pride to the nation by elevating the UAE’s name and flag on the Asian football stage. Sheikh Sultan emphasized that the victory reflects the country’s growing sporting accomplishments and highlights the sustained progress of Emirati sports under the visionary guidance of the nation’s leadership.
