It wasn’t about interest, the numbers simply didn’t add up

Karachi Kings spinner Adam Zampa has revealed that financial reasons, not lack of interest, led to his decision to skip the Indian Premier League (IPL), admitting he was “not really on the radar” of franchises.

Speaking in an interview, the Australian leg spinner explained that the pay on offer did not match the time commitment required for the tournament.

“To be brutally honest, for someone with my skill set, the money just isn’t there compared to what’s available for other skill sets,” Zampa said. “Considering the amount of time the IPL requires, it didn’t seem like a reasonable choice for me to keep playing.”

Zampa had initially planned to take a break from cricket, but an unexpected opportunity in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) changed his plans.

“I was planning to take a break, but then the PSL came onto the radar about a month ago,” he said. “It all happened pretty quickly, but I’m enjoying it.”

The 34 year old was drafted by Karachi Kings just weeks ago and has already made an impact in the tournament.

Reflecting on the competition, Zampa highlighted the quality in the PSL, especially after a closely fought match.

“Looking at the team we played against, you can see the names in their squad and the quality, particularly of their bowling attack. It’s almost an international level attack,” he said.

“We were chasing 129, and for them to make it so close shows the quality of their bowling. There are definitely some strong teams out there.”

Zampa also reserved special praise for Lahore Qalandars captain Shaheen Afridi, calling him one of the most exciting bowlers to watch.

“I really enjoy watching Shaheen Afridi. I played against him recently, and he bowled really well and took four wickets. It always feels like something is happening when he’s bowling,” Zampa said.

He added that facing Shaheen is never easy.

“I have faced him before, and honestly, most of the time I’m just trying not to get hurt. He clearly knows what he’s doing and has a real knack for taking wickets.”

Zampa also mentioned his friendship with Haris Rauf but maintained that Shaheen stands out the most.

“There are a lot of good cricketers around. Haris Rauf is a good friend of mine, but if I had to pick, I’d say I enjoy watching Shaheen the most,” he added.

Zampa's IPL career

The 34 year old Adam Zampa has played 22 matches across several IPL seasons since 2016, representing Rising Pune Supergiant, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Rajasthan Royals and most recently Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2025. Over his IPL career, he has taken 31 wickets, with a career best of 6 for 19.
