Dubai: Owais Hameed, who emerged as the best bowler in the Asia Cup Under-19 tournament, wants to master the art of bowling doosra and establish himself as an allrounder.
"I want to sharpen my off spin by learning to bowl doosra and also improve my batting skills. My aim is to become a good allrounder," remarked Owais, proudly displaying the man of the match and best bowler awards which he won in Malaysia.
Owais bowled UAE to victory over Oman taking five wickets.
He also produced a six-wicket spell against Afghanistan in the semifinal but his effort went in vain as UAE lost the match.
Owais picked up 16 wickets in Malaysia. "I am pleased with my performance because the wickets were flat but still I managed to get wickets" he said.
Owais rates his spell against Afghanistan as his best. "They had batsmen who play in Pakistan and even in county cricket. So it was nice to get their wickets," said Owais.
Owais' father Abdul Hameed is a leg spinner, who played first class cricket in Pakistan along with Javed Miandad, Irman Khan and Zaheer Abbas. Hameed taught his three children Umer, Owais and Obaid to bowl spin.
"My eldest son Umer is a leg spinner and has played for UAE senior team. Obaid is only 17 and has played for UAE U-15, U-17 and U-19 teams.. All three are hard workers and I am pleased with their progress," remarked the proud father.
Saqlain hero
Obaid got injured in Malaysia and got to play in only two matches but bowled well against Malaysia to help UAE clinch the third place.
Owais idolises Saqlain Mushtaq.
"While attending the Mark Waugh clinic Waugh told me that I bowl top-spin like Saqlain. UAE coach Abey Kuruvila too has encouraged me a lot," said Owais who plays for ECB Blues in domestic tournaments.
