Khan's one-man show against Wesco
Dubai: It was one of the finest allround performances in domestic cricket.
Saleem Khan of Sana Rent A Car hit an unbeaten 201 out of his team's total of 300 for 4 and then went on to pick four wickets.
This spectacular one-man show by Khan resulted in the Wesco Cricket team crashing to a 135-run defeat in the Dubai Cricket Council (DCC) Invitation Cup at the DCC ground.
It overshadowed a fine century by former UAE player Akbar Rana, who hit a 108 for Emirates Islamic Bank against Sanyo XI in the same tournament.
However, the hero of the day was undoubtedly Khan. He hit 33 boundaries and six huge sixes in his knock of 201, which came off just 80 balls. Khan's spell of 4 for 29 and Retaish's 5 for 31 resulted in Wesco being bowled out for 165. Rana's 108 runs for Emirates Bank came off 70 balls. With Asim he put on a 150 run partnership. Asim hit 63 runs while Salim Saeed cracked a breezy 37 to help the bankers pile up 288 runs.
Sanyo, chasing the huge target, fell to the bowling of Jameel, Shiraz and Khurram to be shot out for 63.
Meanwhile, Standard Chartered Bank recorded a 55-run win over Al Moe. Akhil Purohit sparkled with a fine 46 and then went on to pick up three wickets.
In another match Prasad hit a quick 68 runs in just 42 balls with nine hits to the fence to help Yogi Group pile up 249 for 9.
Chasing the score, Liwa Properties were restricted to 144 for 9. Afzal picked three wickets while Shiva bagged two. Imran's unbeaten fighting 45 went in vain. Al Masa recorded an easy nine-wicket win over Maklai through a elegant 60 runs off just 26 balls.
Maklai, batting first, could muster only 132 for 9 despite Tariq top scoring with 35. Parvez was the pick among the bowlers with a spell of 2 for 9. Al Masa raced to the target through Sailesh's quick knock. Sailesh had good support from Asahraf, who also hit 38.
Meanwhile, the DPS Insportz cricket academy, which has been promoting the game in a big manner, have announced another coaching camp.
This academy, which recently attracted girls to play cricket, has flown in former England player Geoff Cook to conduct a coaching camp here. Cook is currently the director of Durham County Cricket Club and his camp is being held at the Delhi Private School, Sharjah. Cook's camp is being sponsored by Etihad Airways and is open to both boys and girls.
He will be assisted by Prosanta Chanda and Saleem Saeed.
"I'm sure it will be a big boost for the youngsters," said Shahzad Altaf, chief coach and promoter of DPS-Insportz Cricket Academy.
