BCCI to assess situation before announcing revised schedule and venues
Dubai: The Indian Premier League 2025 has been suspended for a week following an escalation in the India-Pakistan conflict, according to a statement from the Indian cricket board on Friday.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week. Further updates regarding the new schedule and venues of the tournament will be announced in due course after a comprehensive assessment of the situation in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders,” the board statement read.
“The decision was taken by the IPL Governing Council after due consultation with all key stakeholders following representations from most of the franchisees, who conveyed the concerns and sentiments of their players, as well as the views of the broadcaster, sponsors and fans. The Board considered it prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders.”
Thursday’s IPL match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala — less than 200 kilometres (125 miles) from the town of Jammu, where explosions were reported hours earlier — was abandoned due to an apparent floodlight failure.
Initially, the IPL Governing Council had relocated Sunday’s game between Punjab and Mumbai Indians — also scheduled in Dharamsala — to Ahmedabad. However, with the India-Pakistan conflict entering its second day and military hostilities intensifying, the BCCI decided to suspend Season 18 of the tournament.
The tensions follow last month’s deadly militant attack in India-administered Kashmir.
Earlier in the day, a senior BCCI official, confirming the development to PTI, said: “It does not look nice that cricket goes on during the circumstances.”
