Arshad Ali/Gulf News Smell... the M.S. Dhoni way Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s signature fragrance is called ‘7 by M.S. Dhoni’

Dubai Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni launched his signature perfume ‘7 by M.S. Dhoni’ at a colourful function at the Madinat Jumeirah yesterday.

”Perfumes, much like cricket, are a product of passion. I have been passionate about perfumes as much as I have been passionate about cricket,” he told a packed ballroom.

Despite the occasion being about the launch, Dhoni also gave a few insights into cricket. ”The best team I have played against is West Indies. They play a different type of cricket as they basically are a funloving people and are not the kind of people who are known for sledging. So, it is always fun to play against the West Indies team, though they have a number of good fast bowlers who can bowl quick and can intimidate you at times. They also have a batsmen like Chris Gayle. So you need to worry about a lot of things but overall they are fantastic team and that is what I love about them,” he said, satisfying the curiosity of the West Indian Master of Ceremony.

Dhoni then went on reveal why he chose the number 7 for his perfume: “I was born on seventh of July, my year of birth is also ‘81, which is also one minus 8 that is seven. Once I got into the Indian team, I took the number 7 jersery not by consulting an astrologer but I always felt that seven was very special for me. It is not any superstition though,”

Dhoni then went on to reveal how tough it was to find time amidst his busy schedule to give shape to the project. ”Choosing a fragrance is not easy. There is no middle path in people’s liking. Either they say it is very good or they will say they don’t like it. So it was very difficult because of the fact that I was playing a lot of cricket and when once the series start I don’t spend a lot of time away from cricket as I feel it can be distraction.”

Dhoni said he owes it to cricket for being able to launch such an event and also on way to becoming the richest cricketer. “I know one thing, if I don’t play good cricket I don’t think any management company can make me the wealthiest or highly earning cricketer. For me, what is important is play well on the field . There is lot of love and affection from the fans’ side. If you don’t have a big fan following it makes the job very difficult for the player management company.”

Dhoni also revealed that his wife Sakshi Rawat had also played a role in finalizing the perfume. “Sakshi helped me choose the fragrances and helped me work out the real ones I did not get my chance to have conversation with other members of my family or my (Indian) teammates.”
