Guangzhou: One of the top officials from the UAE Bowling Association (UAE BA) has come up with a technical explanation that may well be among the main reasons for the country's failure at the Asian Games.

"The pins are new and heavier and this is affecting the actual results in the end," Mohammad Ali Al Gazzal Al Shamsi, General Secretary, UAE BA, told Gulf News.

"The team is bowling well, but from experience I think it is the new pins that are the cause for our results so far," he explained.

However, the general secretary further observed that the solution to the problem would be to increase ball speed. "But this is not a good option at this stage as it will increase player fatigue and consistency will suffer," he added.

Much was expected from the bowling squad here after two of the silver medals at the 2006 Doha Asian Games came in the singles and doubles. "Here we have some of the top teams from the region including Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia and Hong Kong. So it was always going to be a tough assignment to repeat that feat," the official admitted.

"Secondly, it may also be that the players are under constant pressure due to this expectation that they have to bring home the medals ... considering that bowling is so much of a mental sport that may have affected our bowlers," he added.
