Los Angeles: The Green Bay Packers placed quarterback Aaron Rodgers on injured reserve on Friday, one day after he had surgery to repair his broken right collarbone.

Rodgers, who led the Packers to a Super Bowl title in the 2010 season, was hurt in the first quarter of Sunday’s 23-10 loss at Minnesota after taking a hit from Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr.

Current NFL rules allow teams to bring two players back from the injured reserve list after an eight-week absence, so Rodgers might yet be able to return this season. Packers coach Mike McCarthy indicated that was one of the discussion points as the team weighed whether to place their star on injured reserve — a designation that once spelt the end of a player’s season.
