Dubai: One year into the Qatar crisis, which broke out on June 5 after the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Egypt severed their diplomatic, trade and travel relations with Doha, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Gargash has accused Doha of lacking wisdom.
The Quartet says Qatar supports extremists and funds terrorism, and has issued a list of 13 demands for Doha.
Qatar rejected the list, resulting in a standoff that mediation efforts, led by Kuwait, have not succeeded in resolving.
The Quartet has maintained that Qatar should focus on addressing the real roots of the crisis, and distance itself from media campaigns and populist claims and useless carnivals.
“A Western journalist told me that press delegations were heading to Doha on paid holidays to attend Qatar’s celebrations of one year of isolation. The immobile diplomacy did not end Qatar’s crisis because Doha did not address its reasons and instead focused on the media and on festivities,” Gargash posted on his Twitter account late on Monday.
“More important than ‘celebrating’ one year of isolation and confusion and Gulf steadfastness and confrontation, is the total lack of wisdom for the past year, which turned Qatar into a reality that is easy to live with. The crisis is being ignored by everyone, except for those who will attend the paid holiday. And they will mark it only for fleeting moments.”
Gargash said the principal lesson of one year of the crisis and isolation is the interest of the people should take precedence over an impossible political ambition.
“Paid festivals are merely an echo that can be purchased. It is far more important to win over your neighbour and your surroundings by ending your harmful behaviour towards them. Wisdom is easy and direct; anything else is just a costly maze,” he posted
