Dubai: He dresses like a bride with a flaming orange beard and claims to be a spiritual guide. He is from Hyderabad, Sindh, in Pakistan. And social media has erupted in a furore.

Wearing henna, adorned in heavy jewellery and an orange dress that is traditionally worn by brides from the Sub-continent, ‘Dulhan Wali Sarkar’ reportedly appears at nighttime in Resham Gali, a marketplace in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. While other details about the man are missing, the title is commonly being used to refer to him.

Apparent from the videos circulating online, he holds events in which attendees pay obeisance to him.

Social media users are sharing clips in which his followers are seen giving him money as well as dancing at his events. Just like his attire, the ceremonies seem to be wedding themed.

While some people are shocked and find the news amusing, many are furious.

Twitter user @Shahid_Pashteen thought that people should invest in other places: “Ignorant people showering him with money and these same people will not give a penny to a hungry child on street #shame”

Similarly, tweep @KazmiSaq posted: “Baba Dulhan Wali Sarkar in Hyderabad... Look at the level of ignorance we have descended into.”

Most agreed that his antics are far from spiritual. Twitter user Ayesha khan @ayesha_JanBaaz wrote: “Lack of ... knowledge.”

A number of netizens demanded action to be taken against the man. Many sent messages and pictures to television presenter and journalist, Iqrar Al Hassan, who is known to highlight social issues in the country.

Al Hassan also hosts a television show called Sar-e-Aam which is famous for exposing corrupt and unauthentic products and public services. Social media users hope that Dulhan Wali Sarkar would be featured on one of its episodes.

Replying to a post sent to Al Hassan, tweep @akmalik81 wrote: “Iqrar Bhai please I request you to look into the matter of new fake peer Dulhan Shah in Hyderabad.”

Pakistan is home to many self-proclaimed spiritual leaders. Many of them are unrecognised by Islamic authorities. Some of them have been exposed for using their claims to commit fraud and emotionally blackmail people.
