PATNA: A woman in Bihar was gang-raped while she was taking holy dip in river Ganga as part of a Hindu ritual, creating wide outrage in the society.

The incident took place on Tuesday but came to light after a video of the incident which the accused persons also had shot went viral in the social media.

The police have arrested both the accused persons and announced to speedily try the case.

Police said the woman, 45, was taking bath in the river at Barh town in Patna district when the miscreants went near her in the water, dragged her out and then took turns to rape her at a lonely place while her clothes were still soaked in water. One of the miscreants also made a video of the entire incident to blackmail her in future.

As per the report, the woman made fervent appeals to the miscreants to spare her saying she has taken fast in view of the festival, asked them to consider the sanctity of river Ganga which is worshipped by the Hindus and finally also addressed them as “brothers” but all these failed to move them.

Initially, the victim remained silent keeping in view her social image but finally registered a complaint with the police after the video went viral in the social media.

“After committing the crime the accused persons also reached my home and threatened me with dire consequences if I opened my mouth,” the victim told the media. The victim stays alone with her little children at the villager as her husband works outside.

“We have arrested both the accused persons and the case will be speedily tried to ensure justice is delivered to her soon,” Patna’s senior superintendent of police Manu Maharaj told the media on Thursday, describing it as a “heinous act”. The Bihar State Women Commission has taken a cognisance of the incident and asked the authorities to submit the action taken report within 10 days. “We have also ordered for providing monetary compensation to the victim,” commission chairman Dilmani Mishra said.
