Dubai: The son of a Delhi cop was arrested on Friday, on charges of rape and criminal intimidation after a video of him went viral on social media. The video purportedly showed the young man brutally thrashing a woman.

The man was later identified as Rohit Kumar Tomar, son of ASI Ashok Kumar who is posted as an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in the narcotics department of Delhi Police (Central Delhi).

Twitter user @poprahul33 shared the video and wrote: “A Delhi cop’s boy thrashing an innocent girl. Is this how these cops teach law to their son?”

Tomar was arrested for assaulting two women on different occasions.

Girlfriend approached the police

According to media reports, Tomar was arrested after his former girlfriend approached the police on September 11, alleging that he had been threatening her and forcing her to be with him. The First Information Report was filed as a part of preventive measures under the Criminal Procedure Code.

The woman approached the police again on Thursday, alleging that she had been molested, and Tomar was intimidating her by showing her a video of a woman being beaten by him.

According to the police: “He threatened her by saying that if she doesn’t do as he says, he’ll beat her up the same way as he is beating the woman in the video.”

Tomar was arrested and additional charges of molestation and criminal intimidation were added to the FIR.

Woman in video alleges rape

The woman in the video was also identified and approached on Thursday night.

The video had been recorded on September 2 around 3pm inside an office space in the Uttam Nagar area of Delhi, where the 21-year-old worked.

The police recorded the woman’s complaint on Friday. She alleged that she has been raped by the accused. A case on charges of rape was registered at the Uttam Nagar Police station.

Twitter user @priyanktripathi wrote: “@DCPWestDelhi has identified the location of the Viral Video. It was shot on September 2, in Uttam Nagar area. Total two FIR filed against the accused Rohit Tomar... son of a @DelhiPolice cop.”

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted on Friday morning regarding the incident saying that he had seen the video and asked the Commissioner of Delhi Police to take prompt action.

Twitter users said Tomar deserved to be punished immediately.

Lawyer and activist Prashant Bhushan (@pbhushan1) tweeted: “Gruesome story of the son of a policeman, drunk on alcohol and power, brutally thrashing women. Such people must not be let out on bail and given an exemplary punishment. But unfortunately, policemen usually bail out their own.”

According to an international opinion survey published by the Thomson Reuters Foundation, India was found to be the most dangerous country in the world to be a woman.

Twitter user @pujaawasthi highlighted the lack of safety that women faced in India. She wrote: “... in Delhi cop’s son assaults girl. What gives our country’s men the impunity to do so? Do they believe it’s just a ‘woman’ after all and so it does not matter? #violenceagainstwomen”
