Hyderabad: The three-day annual meeting of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), a platform of most sects and organisations of Muslims in India, began in Hyderabad on Friday evening amid a fresh controversy over efforts for an out-of-court settlement of Babri Masjid-Ram Janam Bhoomi dispute.
The controversy was sparked off by a senior cleric and a member of the AIMPLB Syed Salman Nadvi meeting Art of Living Founder Sri Sri Ravishankar in Bengaluru yesterday to discuss the issue.
The Babri Masjid case pending before the Supreme Court and the controversial Triple Talaq Bill of the Narendra Modi government will be among the key issues to be discussed at the AIMPLB plenary at the Salar-e-Millat Indoor Stadium in Hyderabad.
The meeting between Nadvi, other Muslim leaders and Sri Sri Ravishankar was unlikely to find any takers at the Board meeting.
Moulana Syed Khaleel-ur-Rahman Sajjad Nadvi, spokesperson of the Board denied that any member had brought any proposal before the Board regarding the Babri Masjid land.
Sri Sri Ravishankar, who has been trying to emerge as a mediator between Hindu and Muslim communities claimed after the meeting with Salman Nadvi that the Muslim leaders had agreed to the proposal of shifting the Masjid from the disputed site to another place.
Hyderabad Member of Parliament and a key of member of the Board Asaduddin Owaisi strongly rejected any such possibility. He told the reporters at the venue of Board meeting that the matter was pending before the Supreme Court.
“The Supreme Court will decide the dispute. The court also said that this is a land issue. The BJP should stop its agents from using the issue”, he said referring to attempts by Ravishankar to play a mediator.
While the Working Committee of the Board met this evening with Board President Moulana Rabey Hasan Nadvi in chair, the annual plenary meet will start from Saturday morning.
Moulana Nomani said that the Triple Talaq Bill will be among the major items on the agenda.
