Patna: In a severe embarrassment for the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader has been arrested for allegedly raping the secretary of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Bihar. The arrested leader happens to be the head of the NGO which claims to be working for creating social awareness among the women class.

Police arrested Baban Yadav, Bhojpuri movie actor-turned-leader, soon after the secretary of an NGO nicknamed Buddha Society Seva Foundation registered a case with the Patna police on Wednesday. Yadav is the chief of this NGO.

In her complaint, the victim charged the man with frequently raping and assaulting her. “The accused has been arrested and sent to jail,” a local police official SN Singh told the media Thursday.

The BJP while taking the matter seriously has expelled the accused from the party. “Baban Yadav has been dismissed from the party,” state BJP chief Nityanand Rai announced today.

The incident comes amid reports of spate of sexual abuse of girls lodged in the state-run shelter homes. In a similar case, the police have arrested Brajesh Thakur, head of another NGO located in Muzaffarpur town where as many as 34 girls were raped. The matter is being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The police have also arrested a senior official working as the district project manager in Vaishali district for allegedly sexually exploiting the girls lodged at a shelter home running there. The official identified as Manmohan Prasad Singh was arrested late Monday evening following complaints by the inmates.

According to complaints by victims, the said officials would routinely reach the shelter home in the name of checking and would sexually abuse them. “He (the official) would straightway enter into our room and ask us to massage his body during which he would molest,” the victim girls have complained.

In another development, the police have registered a case against a ruling Janata Dal United (JD-U) lawmaker Umesh Kushwaha in connection with murder of an elected block representative in Vaishali district on Monday. Kushwaha represents Mahnar seat in Bihar assembly.

The slain block chief Manish Sahni who also happened to be the district secretary of Rashtriya Lok Samata Party (RLSP) had hardly arrived at his office located at Jandaha block and was heading towards his chamber when the gangsters fired at him from a close range. He succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital later.
