Driving into Abu Dhabi? Learn how to check Darb toll fines and avoid penalties
For Abu Dhabi motorists or anyone who regularly drives into the emirate, it’s important to understand how the Darb toll system works to avoid unexpected fines.
The system automatically charges vehicles entering Abu Dhabi Island via key bridges. While the registration process is simple, missing essential steps like registering your vehicle or maintaining sufficient balance can result in hefty penalties.
The Darb toll system is part of Abu Dhabi’s strategy to reduce traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. Managed by Q Mobility, the system only applies when entering Abu Dhabi Island via specific bridges.
Unlike other toll systems, drivers do not need to install a physical tag. The system automatically recognises vehicle number plates as they pass under toll gates.
If you fail to register your vehicle or maintain sufficient balance, fines may apply. Here’s a breakdown of the penalties:
1. Unregistered vehicle
A 10-working-day grace period applies from the first time you drive through a toll gate. After that:
Dh100 for the first offence
Dh200 for the second offence
Dh400 for the third offence and beyond
2. Insufficient balance
For vehicles not registered in Abu Dhabi, fines are applied after a five-working-day grace period:
Dh50 for each toll transaction without enough balance in the Darb account
3. Manipulating a number plate
Dh10,000 fine for any attempt to tamper with a number plate to avoid toll payments
4. Damaging toll infrastructure
Dh10,000 fine for damaging Darb electronic toll gates or payment machines
5. Maximum accumulated violations
A single vehicle cannot be fined more than Dh10,000 per violation
Total annual fines per vehicle are capped at Dh25,000, starting from the date of the first violation
