Dubai: As the cooler months descend on the UAE, many families embrace outdoor activities like barbecuing in local parks or setting up camps in the desert. While these activities are fun and enjoyable, adhering to essential health and safety guidelines is crucial to ensure an enjoyable and accident-free experience.

With the rising popularity of outdoor gatherings, local municipal authorities are ramping up efforts to raise awareness about safety practices, helping residents and visitors make the most of their time outdoors. Here is what you need to know:

Food safety tips for grilling while camping

Recently, Sharjah Municipality shared guidelines on maintaining hygienic food practices during grilling. Follow these tips to ensure food safety:

Before you head out:

  • Prepare ingredients at home and store them in a cooler with plenty of ice.

  • Keep raw meat separate from vegetables and ready-to-eat foods.

  • Use separate utensils and cutting boards for raw and cooked items to prevent cross-contamination.

While cooking and serving:

  • Cook meat thoroughly until it is fully done—no pink remains.

  • Serve food immediately after cooking and avoid leaving it exposed to the elements.

When leaving the campsite:

  • Discard any food left out for more than two hours or exposed to contaminants.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.

  • Clean all utensils, grilling areas, and surfaces used during your barbecue.

Camping and barbecuing in the desert

For those heading into the desert, Al Dhafrah Municipality in Abu Dhabi has provided practical tips to ensure safety during winter camping adventures:

  • Keep barbecue tools and fires at a safe distance from tents.

  • Ensure mobile phones and navigation devices are functional and connected.

  • Choose your camping location carefully, and avoid going alone for safety reasons.

  • Maintain cleanliness and respect nature by preserving the environment around you.

  • Be aware of potential hazards, such as uneven terrain or wildlife.

  • Carry a well-stocked first aid kit for emergencies.

Avoid fines: Barbecuing in designated areas

It is essential to note that municipalities across Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah have designated specific areas for barbecuing and grilling in public parks. Ignoring these rules by barbecuing in non-designated areas could result in a fine of Dh500. Always look out for signage indicating approved grilling zones.
